Before
the meal, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the recently deceased
loved ones of several of the group present.
The
meal was delicious and enjoyed very much by all. It was lovely to sit down to a
relaxed meal in the busy lead-up to Christmas.
After
the meal came the music and what a sing-song it was! Thanks to the work of Mary
Keaveney of the Galway group, who supplied us with song sheets, there was a
wide variety of song medleys in Irish and in English which the two groups could
share. We also had separate pieces from both groups and even some solos.
A
bouquet of flowers was presented to Una Quinn, leader of the Mayo group, to
thank her for helping to organise the occasion. Unfortunately, Mary Tansey,
musical director of the Galway group, could not be present due to illness but
here again Una helped out: not alone did she play the accompaniment for the Mayo group as they sang but she did
likewise for the Galway group.
The
idea for this joint Christmas lunch came from Mary Kyne, Galway RTA and Una
Quinn, Mayo RTA and it has been a great success. Well done, Mary and Una.
Perhaps there will be other similar events in future years.
