 RTA Galway Musical Group

The  RTA  Singers of Galway are heading into their 5^th year.This group sings only for enjoyment.

After years of putting on concerts for parents and preparing choirs for participation in the sacraments, we now sing for the sheer enjoyment of it.

Our charming director is Mary Tansey.

Choice of songs comes from the group members, but Mary also challenges us with dips into classical music.  The words and music for all scores are diligently researched by Mary Keaveney (an invaluable service ).

We have reached out to our RTA singers in Mayo-----‘Harmonia ‘.A group of us attended their concert in the Linenhall in Castlebar.

Our Treasurer Mary O’Brien alerts us to musical events locally. Many of us have enjoyed A Vienese Christmas and Bel Canto in the Town Hall. We have also enjoyed the Galway Choirs Competition for the past two years.

We are happy to help with hymns for our annual Mass.

We have supported ,in a small way, some lesser known charities ---MECFS and Cáirde Le Chéile, also The Esker Youth Orchestra.

This year we were happy to sing ’Christmas Cheer’ for the Day Care and Long Stay residents in Merlin Park.

Our focus in the coming year will mostly be on songs relating to 1916. New members are always welcome.

Chuir and Cathaoirleach fáilte roimh Billy Sheehan agus Denis Desmond. ‘Rinne Denis sár obair duinn i rith na mblianta agus anois guímid chuile rath agus sonas air. Táimid fíor buíoch dó. Tá bróga móra le líonadh ag Billy ach táim lán cinnte go ndéanfaidh sé and beart mar is sár dhuine é Billy freisin’ a deir Máire Nic Ámhlaigh.

Billy Sheehan replied and thanked the Branch for the warm welcome he received. He had worked for 35 years with INTO and was delighted to have been appointed General Secretary of RTAI. He felt he was among friends.  His objective would be to look after the welfare of our members, to invigorate the web site and to update RTAI hand-book which is now out of date.

Denis thanked Mary for her kind words and he welcomed Billy Sheehan his successor as incoming Secretary of RTAI. He spoke on the following topics:

We in the Galway Branch always eagerly awaited Denis' reports whether the news he brought was favourable or not. We appreciated the effort he made annually to be with us. Denis is now leaving the organisation financially sound and properly structured and for that we are extremely grateful.

 We wish him health and happiness in his retirement.
