YARN CLUB
A Yarn Club was formed on the 20th February by a group of our members who intend meeting a number of times during the year to share their skills and knowledge of sewing, knitting, crochet, tapestry etc.
Members expressed a wish to support a voluntary organisation named Féileacáin (info@feileacain) which was formed by a group of parents bereaved through stillbirth and neonatal death in order to create a support service for other bereaved parents, to promote good practice in the care of families facing the death of a baby around the time of birth and to support research initiatives into the causes of perinatal death in Ireland.
Memory Boxes
Every maternity hospital in Ireland has been provided with the Feileacain Memory Boxes which are available to all parents when their baby dies. Each box contains:
- A hand knitted blanket for parents to wrap their baby in or to lay over him or her at a time of burial
- A single use camera so parents may take precious photographs of their baby.
- A kit to take hand or footprints of their baby.
- Information leaflets on coping with the many facets of infant death
- A little butterfly memento box within which to keep a lock of the baby’s hair.
- A hand-made card and album for parents to note their baby’s details
Two identical Teddy Bears - One for the baby and one for the parents: these may be swapped over just before burial.
The newly formed group intends to support this worthy cause by knitting blankets.
These blankets can also be crochet and patterns will be available or you are welcome
to use a pattern of your own. Members are invited to participate from the comfort of
of their own home or come along and do their own thing in the company of Feileacain knitters at the next gathering on April 15th at 10.30 at the Education Centre.
All you need are Size 8 needles (4mm) and wool will be available to get you started..
