A Memorable Night at the Bolshoi Theatre.

On our recent trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg I, as one of the Galway R.T.A group was lucky enough to enjoy a night at the Bolshoi Theatre.
We were transported to another era of elegance and grandeur – the Theatre was the experience of another time. The magnificence of size, design and colour could only be imagined – from the unbelievable chandlers to the boxes tiered like a wedding cake. We languished in one of those boxes and were privileged to view the whole spectacle of Pytor Tchaikovsky’s ‘Enchantress”. The scale of the production, set designs, lighting effects not to mention the magnificent orchestra was extraordinary.
The theme of the ‘Enchantress’ is a tragic love story set in the 15th century which has a gambit of jealousy, power, betrayal and love in its story with a sad and dramatic conclusion. It is one of the lesser known of Tchaikovsky’s works. It was first performed in 1884.
The leading roles were excellent and the male chorus was robust and rousing. Over all it was a balanced colourful unique production. The production team has a splendid reputation nationally from Alexander Lazarev musical conductor to director Alexander Tital. This night was one of the highlights of our trip to Moscow. It will remain in my memory for years to come.
