Following Mass in a short address to the assembled members Denis Desmond stressed –
1. That to maintain eligibility for Social Welfare benefits, your Social Welfare Record must be maintained until your 66th birthday by signing on for CREDITS at your local Dept. of Social and Family Affairs.
2. He advised Retiring Teachers to attend the retirement course run by the I.N.T.O.
3. Members who lost their Medical Card
are now subject to an income levy. An Application Form for exemption from PRSI and income levies was sent to all teachers in Nov. 2009.
If members wanted to maintain their medical cards the advice given was to fill Part 1, ignore Part 2, and
send a copy of their medical card to the Dept. of Education and Science.
4. He advised members to look after their own Free Travel, Electricity/Natural
Gas, TV Allowance, and Telephone Allowance by applying to the Dept. of Social and Family Affairs.
5. He stressed the importance of
maintaining parity at all costs. If serving teachers’ salaries are reduced then pensioners should
be willing to take a similar cut in pensions. If parity is broken it will have a disastrous affect on serving teachers’ entitlements to pension and gratuity.
56 members enjoyed the traditional Christmas three-course lunch. This is an important social occasion for us all and one we all enjoy.
